What is Proton?
Proton is a privacy-focused technology company offering a suite of encrypted services — email, VPN, cloud storage, calendar, and password management — built around the principle that your data should be private and truly yours. In a world where many free services profit by harvesting and monetising personal data, Proton takes the opposite stance, using strong end-to-end and zero-access encryption so that not even Proton can read your private information. Founded by scientists with a strong privacy mission and based in Switzerland with its strong privacy laws, Proton has become a trusted home for people who want genuine digital privacy.
The suite includes Proton Mail, an encrypted email service that keeps your messages private; Proton VPN, which secures and privatises your internet connection; Proton Drive, encrypted cloud storage for your files; plus an encrypted calendar and password manager. These services work together to cover the core of a person's digital life with privacy built in by design, rather than added as an afterthought. Because the encryption means Proton itself cannot access your content, your data is protected even from the provider, which is a fundamentally different model from services that scan your information to target ads or train systems.
Proton is used by privacy-conscious individuals, journalists, activists, professionals handling sensitive information, and anyone who wants their digital life protected from surveillance and data harvesting. The value is genuine privacy across the essentials: encrypted email, browsing, storage, and more, from a company whose business model and mission are aligned with protecting users rather than exploiting their data. As awareness of digital privacy grows and people seek alternatives to data-hungry services, Proton offers a comprehensive, trustworthy ecosystem where privacy is the default. For anyone who wants to take meaningful control of their personal data and communicate and store information privately, Proton provides a respected, mission-driven suite of secure services.
