iDogNames vs Sizemaven: Which Is Better in 2026?

iDogNames is a free website for people choosing a name for a dog. It combines a browsable name collection with practical tools for narrowing a shortlist and dated reports drawn from public dog-license records. You can start with a meaning, origin or theme, explore ideas, and then compare the names you are seriously considering.

The name collection gives owners a place to look beyond a single long list. Meanings and origins can help a family explain why a particular name appeals to them. Theme and breed collections provide other starting points when someone has a general idea of the style they want. The choice stays with the owner: the website supplies ideas and comparison prompts for a personal decision.

The side-by-side comparison tool is useful once you have a few candidates. Enter two to four names and review them together instead of moving back and forth between separate pages. Its read-aloud prompts encourage people to try saying their choices. A household can use that step to discuss which name everyone feels comfortable using in everyday life. These prompts support a conversation; they do not predict a dog's response or replace training advice.

For readers interested in local naming patterns, iDogNames publishes New York City and Seattle dog-license name reports. Each report identifies its snapshot or calculation date, explains the sample, and provides downloadable aggregate data. The records describe licensed dogs in those datasets. They should not be read as a count of every dog in a city, a national popularity ranking or a measurement of all newly named puppies.

A typical visit can be simple: browse ideas, collect a few favorites, compare the shortlist and read a report if local context would help. The browser-based tools require no software installation. Dog owners and families can use the site for naming ideas, while writers can consult the dated reports and their stated limitations when discussing local dog-name data. The core browsing and comparison features are available free on the web.

What problem it solves

Helps dog owners turn a long list of name ideas into a shortlist they can compare and discuss, with dated local license-record context when needed.

Sizemaven tells you which size to buy, then shows real products in that size. A size chart usually stops at the size, and a store usually shows only its own catalog, sized with its own chart. Sizemaven joins the two steps.

How it works. Pick what you are buying and enter a few numbers: the room and the bed for a rug, your weight, height and boot size for a snowboard, a player's age and position for a baseball glove, or your dog's chest for a harness. Every field says where the tape goes, and most tools need two or three numbers. The tool gives one size and the reason for it, names the chart the answer comes from, and draws many answers to scale. When you fall between two sizes, it says when the other size is the better pick. When the numbers cannot produce a sensible answer, such as a room too small for the bed, it says so instead of guessing.

Where the rules come from. Each tool follows rules that someone accountable has published: makers such as Wilson, Osprey, Jones Snowboards and PING, specialist retailers such as REI and evo, and standards and professional bodies. Across the 18 tools the site cites 99 pages from 78 websites, and every tool page lists its sources with links.

What you get. One size answer, the rule and source behind it, and a shortlist of products on Amazon whose listings confirm that size, within your budget. Each product model appears once, and prices are checked at least every 24 hours. You can email yourself a link to your result.

What it covers. Home (rugs, beds, curtains), sports (snowboards, skis, golf clubs, wetsuits), outdoors (backpack torso fit, sleeping bags, kayak paddles), kids (kids' shoes, youth baseball gloves), pets (dog crates, dog harnesses) and style (rings, shoe size, belts, gloves). Twenty-two size guides answer common questions, such as queen bed dimensions, standard curtain lengths or women's to men's shoe sizes, and a printable ring sizer checks its own print scale with a 100 mm line.

Pricing. Free, with no account. Sizemaven earns a small commission from Amazon when a visitor buys through its links. No brand pays to be listed, and the site shows no ads.
