IcyZip

IcyZip is a browser-based handoff tool for moving live text and one selected file between two devices. Open icyzip.com in one browser, scan the displayed QR code with the other device or open its pairing link, and keep both browser tabs online. The two views then share a live text field for notes, links, codes and other short text. A file can be selected and sent when both browsers are connected; the current file-size limit is 25 MiB.

No account, email address, browser extension or app installation is required to use IcyZip. It works through modern web browsers on phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers. A built-in camera reader can scan the IcyZip pairing QR code in supported mobile browsers, with the normal device camera or pairing link available as alternatives.

Live text and file bytes are encrypted in the sending browser and decrypted in the paired receiving browser. The service relays ciphertext. It still processes connection and transfer metadata needed to operate the pairing, such as timing, IP-derived country, browser class, message size, and for files the filename, type hint and sizes. Pairing identifiers may be retained for reconnection, but plaintext live text and received files are not stored as durable server content.

The browser end-to-end encryption module, protocol notes, executable tests, attack-regression tests and public Git history are available at https://icyzip.com/open-source under the Apache License 2.0. The rest of the hosted service is not presented as open source. Anyone can inspect or download that security-relevant component, reproduce its tests, submit a public issue without an account, or report a suspected weakness privately.

The live text editor includes copy, paste, select all, clear, undo, redo and fullscreen actions where browser capabilities allow. When direct clipboard access is unavailable, the interface explains how to use the browser's native command. The interface supports multiple languages and offers a manual language selector.

IcyZip is intended for quick device-to-device handoff while both browsers are open. It is not a cloud drive, folder-sync service, offline drop box, LAN discovery tool, peer-to-peer transport, or background clipboard monitor. The service is currently free to use and has no paid plan.

What problem it solves

Moving a link, code, note or small file between a phone and computer often means emailing it to yourself, installing an app, creating an account or putting it in cloud storage. IcyZip gives two currently open browsers a temporary shared text field and optional encrypted file handoff instead.
