About VIN Lookup

VIN Lookup is a free web tool that decodes any 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the vehicle's make, model, model year, body style, engine, and assembly plant. It uses public data from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) vPIC database, so results reflect what manufacturers have filed with the federal government. There is no signup, no account, and no paywall for the decode.

Who it is for: used-car buyers who want to confirm a listing matches the actual vehicle, private sellers who want to describe a car accurately, mechanics and parts counters who need the exact engine or trim, and developers or students curious about how VINs are structured.

What problem it solves: online car listings are often wrong, sometimes by accident and sometimes on purpose. A quick decode shows what the car should be according to the manufacturer. If the decoded year, engine, or body type does not match the ad, that is a red flag worth asking about before spending money on a history report, inspection, or deposit.

How it works: enter or paste the VIN, and VIN Lookup validates the format and check digit (position 9), then returns the decoded specifications. It also explains the three sections of a VIN: the World Manufacturer Identifier (positions 1-3), the Vehicle Descriptor Section (positions 4-9), and the Vehicle Identifier Section (positions 10-17), including the model-year code and plant code.

What it is not: VIN Lookup does not sell title or accident history. For title brands such as salvage, flood, or rebuilt, buyers should use an approved NMVTIS provider, and they should check open recalls on NHTSA's recall site. VIN Lookup is designed as the free first step in that process, along with guides on reading a VIN, title brands, and import checks.
